CIVITAS has identified the disposal of solid waste – garbage – as one of the biggest challenges to the environment of New York City, of the UES and of East Harlem.

CIVITAS is a vocal advocate for regulating the proliferating nuisance of abandoned, vandalized, and poorly maintained newsrack boxes on sidewalks and busy street corners.

Healthy street trees are essential to quality of life in our neighborhoods. CIVITAS advocates for improved tree stewardship in East Harlem and the Upper East Side through individual, community, and city efforts.

CIVITAS is concerned with disposal of the large volume of solid waste generated on the East Side of Manhattan, both residential and commercial, and how it affects air pollution levels, congestion and impact on residential areas.
