Join CIVITAS for a group outing to see the documentary film Urbanized, the third part of director Gary Hustwit’s design film trilogy. Urbanized, which focuses on international urban design strategies, premiered at Urban Design Week in NYC this fall.

6:20PM Screening on Thursday, November 17 at the IFC Center (Sixth Avenue and W. 3rd Street)
After the screening we will head over to a local bar to chat about the film.

Join CIVITAS at the Kick-Off Event for Reimagining the Waterfront Design-Ideas Competition
with a lecture by award-winning author Phillip Lopate on his book Waterfront: A Journey Around Manhattan
Wednesday, October 26, 2011 – 7pm
Veterans Room, Park Avenue Armory, 643 Park Avenue (between 66th-67th streets)
Introduction by Council Member Jessica Lappin.
The event is $10.  There is no charge for CIVITAS members.  Signed copies of Waterfront will be available for purchase.

For the second year, CIVITAS will participate in openhousenewyork weekend with a walking tour Shaping Urban Design & Policy:  The East 96th Street Corridor. The tour will focus on the way zoning and land use policy shape the physical landscape of New York, and how city policies and neighborhood advocacy have affected the built environment of the Upper East Side and East Harlem.  Sites will include:  the former Squadron A armory ruins on Madison Avenue, 108 East 96th Street (where 12 illegal stories were removed in 1991), Second Avenue subway construction sites and the neighborhood’s special zoning districts, historic districts and landmarks.

The event will take place on October 15, 2011

On March 3, 2011 CIVITAS celebrated its 30th Anniversary Benefit at the historic Americas Society.  The August Heckscher Awards for Community Service was presented to two institutions who have made significant contributions to quality of life on the Upper East Side and in East Harlem:

Tony Bechara, Chair, and El Museo del Barrio: As the longtime chair, Tony has overseen the development of El Museo into a standout cultural institution in East Harlem and in New York City. El Museo strikes a balance in cultural programming for diverse ages in its surrounding community and avant-garde art installations.

Paul Buckhurst, Frank Fish and Georges Jacquemart and BFJ Planning: The land use planning and transportation consulting firm is well-respected for its work in New York City and around the world. CIVITAS has worked with principals of BFJ on studies and recommendations related to streetscape improvements to the 96th and 125th Street corridors and to the Second Avenue subway station entrances and mechanical structures.

Previous August Heckscher honorees Bruce Fowle, Founding Principal of FXFOWLE and Susan Henshaw Jones, Director of The Museum of the City of New York presented the 2011 awards.  Honorable Pete and Ainslie Grannis were the event’s honorary chairs.

Benefit Co-Chairs were David Beer, Janis Eltz, Jamie Gibbs, Jeanne McAnaney, Steven Narker, Genie Rice, and Sava Thomas.
