On October 10, 2010 CIVITAS particpated in openhousenewyork weekend with a walking tour: Shaping Urban Design & Policy: The East 96th Street Corridor. The tour focused on the way zoning and land use policy shape the physical landscape of New York, and how city policies and neighborhood advocacy have affected the built environment of the Upper East Side and East Harlem. Sites included: the former Squadron A armory ruins on Madison Avenue, 108 East 96th Street (where 12 illegal stories were removed in 1991), Second Avenue subway construction sites and the neighborhood’s special zoning districts, historic districts and landmarks.
